PRODUCT NO. PC-MEE001.02
Overview
The trainer has been designed to meet the specific requirements of healthcare professionals training in surgical or guidewire assisted thoracostomy and thoracentesis. The trainer is approved for use with needle decompression possible at the 2nd and 5th intercostal spaces.
- Chest drainage and needle decompression of tension pneumothorax
- Thoracic closed drainage
- Postoperative care of drainage tube
- Management of pleural effusion
Anatomy
- Represent of adult male thorax with arms raised
- Clavicle, ribs, manubriosternal joint, mammilla, pleural cavity, chest wall
The right side of the manikin has one cutaway viewing area to illustrate the anatomical relationships between the skin surface, musculature, ribs, and lungs. The left side has one pressurized tension pneumothorax site and a site for the surgical placement of a functional chest tube. It is the site to surgically insert chest tubes to treat pleural effusion by draining fluids from the pleural space. Fluid color, volume, and viscosity can be controlled by the instructor.
Realism
- Needle decompression air reservoirs provide realistic releases of air on insertion of needle.
- Reservoirs can be filled with fluid or simulated blood to represent pleural effusion.
- Anatomically accurate representation of an adult male torso with raised arms.
- A “pop” is felt as the needle enters the thoracic cavity.
- Affordable replaceable skin pad.
- Combined use of the standard Pads and the chest reservoirs allows for the simulation of pleural effusion.
Cleaning
- Drain all fluid from the product when not in use.
- Clean the simulator with a damp cloth, using warm water and neutral detergent. Do not use any abrasive cleaning agents or materials.
- Allow trainer to completely dry before storing.
- Keep away from sunshine.
Safety

Operation guidance
Needle Decompression
Plug the hand pump hose into the bottom port in the base of the trainer.
Pump less than 20 times to fill the inner air bladder. (Make sure to prevent overinflation and rupture.) The procedure of Needle Decompression may now be performed at the second intercostal space, midclavicular line. A realistic “hiss” of air releasing upon successfully performing. While the pneumothorax pad may be punctured repeatedly, it will eventually need to be replaced. Simply pump less than 16 times to refill the inner air bladder for a next training.
Chest Tube Insertion
Fill a fluid bag with fluid that has been mixed to the desired color and
fasten the bag clamp before the insert. Connect the bag to the quick-disconnect fitting at the bottom port in base of the trainer. Slowly open the slide clamp on the fluid bag and the procedure may now be performed on the 5th intercostal space. When the air is released, simulated blood will flow into the needle. A correct procedure will fall the fluid level.
